The category's just way too wide. Here are some of my more specific favorites:
Favorite rock song about Steeplechase-"Jean the Birdman" by Sylvian/Fripp
Favorite singer who can sound like an opera diva and seven different cartoon characters in four languages, all in the same song: Diamanda Galas
Favorite Jamband Opera: "Henry's House" by the Lo Faber Band
Favorite Daschophone player: Hans Reichel
Favorite Water Lily Recordings L.P.: "Bourbon and Rosewater" by Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, and Vishwa Mohan Batt

well done,zed.....i threw out a truly general concept, just HOPING for a reply like yours. exactly the kind of answer i was hoping for. this is an opportunity for folks to specifically name the music that is affecting them, presently, and the reasons it does.
as you know,fripp's ALWAYS a favorite,but...daschophone???

Got to be Paul Rodgers (ex Free, Bad Company, The Firm, The Law). Great rock vocalist, pretty good acoustic and electric guitarist, plays keyboard and harmonica too. He's covered a lot of styles within his albums, mainly blues rock, but also rock/country crossover, folk, ballads, blues, soul...just about everything

paul rodgers is very cool. i still spend inordinate amounts of time, listening to "muddy water blues" the album(cd?)he did,a few years ago, with,oh,just an all-star array of guitarists, ranging from jeff beck to buddy guy.
and...this just in...paul will be joining brian may and roger taylor(no word yet on john deacon)in queen's first tour since the passing of freddie mercury. please let this tour come to indiana.....(i am SO there)

Yeah! I was reading about that tour!! Paul Rodgers and Queen...he sure takes on some tough projects - but so far he's always come out tops. Oh to have his versatility!!
I've got his tribute album to Muddy Waters...and every other album he's done dating right back to Free! I study his stuff constantly

As anyone who knows me will attest, I love TOOL. All of the guys in the band are just incredibly talented, and they make very intelligent music.
When it comes to electronic music, I'd have to say Telefon Tel Aviv is my favorite group. Those guys create music that's somewhere between techno and pop, with very melodic pieces and tons of glitchy, rhythmic percussion.
I'm also a big fan of just about anything involving Mike Patton.
Classically, my favorite current artist is Joshua Bell, a violinst. Jazz, I really like Dave Brubeck.
But there's so much more ...

of modern electronic music, I have a personal obsession with portishead, besides the uniformity they've inadvertently brought to the trip hop scene.
and I have listened to no album more than Lateralus, The Whale song is the best album piece in history.
